Comments from Guests
Chan Tour. "Steve is an exceptional guide who made the tour not only interesting and historical, but lots of fun! Our tour took us through haunts and locations relative to the 30-plus Chan movies and six novels written by Biggers. Just as significant and interesting, we visited various sites frequented by Detective Chang Apana--the real life Honolulu detective whom the author based his hero on. Steve's preparation and research for the tour are ever evident. There's so much to tell, but it wouldn't be fair to divulge all of the surprises awaiting one on this fantastic tour! I highly recommend this tour to anyone who's a lover of the classic mystery novel and of course any Charlie Chan aficionados. Thanks Steve for a wonderful tour." Lou Armagno, Postal Affairs Manager, Pacific Air Forces, Hawaii, September 17, 2009.
Ghost Lecture. "I want to take a moment to thank you for sharing your research and knowledge of the spiritual world and ghosts of Hawaii with the students of the Interpersonal Communication Course (COM100). You proved to be a very knowledgeable and engaging speaker. The students here at the Intercultural Communications College were exposed to another way of thinking about Hawaii and its history which stimulated thought and lively discussion. This was evident by the questions students asked you. Questions ranging from why certain areas of Honolulu seem to have more spiritual activity than others to separation of the body and soul, as well as their own observations and beliefs concerning paranormal phenomenon. Your stories of Chinatown in the early 20th Century, your personal experience with the Night Marchers of Hawaii, the sometimes angry, sad, confused, and playful spirits found in the history and streets of Honolulu, all encouraged my students to think about and discuss the topic in a different way. This is, of course, the first step to learning." Steven M. Sigler, Adjunct Faculty, Upper Iowa University at Intercultural Communications College, Honolulu, September 10, 2009.
Ghost Tour. "Thanks for the great personalized tour! We had a wonderful time! It was so odd at how many different events occurred." Diana Moyer, Mt. Vernon, Washington, August 31, 2009.
Ghost Tour. "I have taken another tour hosted by Steve. It was very informative and a lot of fun. While I have not taken any of his new tours, based upon my previous experience, I can tell you that you will have a good time. Now I just need to find a way to get back to Honolulu so that I can take his new tours. Mahalo for the great time." Steven Domingue, Austin, TX, April 9, 2009.
Chan Tour. "Like the mix of history and Hollywood and little known facts; three wives, whip, scare, etc. All interesting. The most interesting was the police department and actual pictures of Apana. The haunted hotel was the most intriguing. I had a nice time and enjoyed all of the tour. I have already passed the tour information on to people who are having company from out of state. Good Luck." Maxine Rutkowski, Honolulu, April 7, 2009.
Chan Tour. "Hi Steve. Tracy and I had a grand time on your tour. We have told several others about the interesting time we had. I think I would like to see your other tours after seeing this one. We LOVED the clues along the way. Very fun. Really brought the neighborhood sense of things. Our favorite parts all had to do with Chinatown, i.e. gambling houses, opium dens, house of ill repute, etc. Give us the Charlie Chan dirt!" Kimi Elder, Honolulu, April 2, 2009.
Chan Tour. "Hey, Steve ... Best part of it all was the historic buildings and tales of Chinatown. Of course, we love Charlie Chan, and so it was great seeing, in his context, the buildings of Yore. The clues are great fun. We had a blast, and will look forward to a ghost tour come fall. In the meantime, keep Charlie going!" Kit Gifford, Honolulu, April 1, 2009.
Wartime Tour. "Thank you for the most informative and entertaining tour of downtown Honolulu. You helped us all imagine the lively, but very different scene of Honolulu in the 1940s." Deborah Forbis, Honolulu, December 28, 2008.
Wartime Tour. "Not only did we have a thoroughly informative tour, but much of the flavor of that era came through. Aided by unscheduled appearances by denizens of what appeared to be a bygone era, police chases and buildings frozen in time, we were treated to an engrossing afternoon. Steven Fredrick has deeply researched everything from yellow pages to matchbook covers to assemble a rich narrative of Honolulu during WWII. Visitors will be amazed and Kama'aina will be surprised at Steve's revelations of that time in our history." Phil & Dorothy Morris, Honolulu, October 5, 2008.
Ghost Tour. "A good storyteller. During his tour, Steve creates truly suspenseful atmosphere. Check this guy out." CC Jr., Honolulu, October 4, 2008.
Ghost Tour. "On Saturday night, I took Uncle Steve's ghost tour in Honolulu, and I saw choke ghosts. This haole boy knows his ghosts. Check this dude out." J C Lee, Honolulu, October 1, 2008.
Wartime Tour. "Being born here in Hawaii and living through the war years has always made me interested in those times. I was very surprised when I took Steve's tour that there still exists many of the landmark sites and buildings of that era. Even though I once worked as a truck-driver who made deliveries all over downtown Honolulu, I never realized the significance of many of the buildings that existed then and still do today. Steve has done extensive research about the war years and has come up with interesting facts about Honolulu that you may never learn about unless you take his tour. His knowledge and humor made the time fly and it was well worth my time! I recommend it to anyone who has interest in Hawaiian history, locales and people." Gerry Kim, Kailua, September 22, 2008.
Wartime Tour. "Steve - Thanks again for the historic tour. You did a great job." Nelson Smith, Hawaii, August 3, 2008.
Wartime Tour. "I think it would be good for my son and daughter to learn about what downtown Honolulu was like when my mother was a teenager, and my father was a newly arrived airman." Mary Lou Davis, Honolulu, July 24, 2008.
Ghost Tour. "We participated in the ghost tour of downtown Oahu hosted by Steve. We caught two whiffs of [the late Governor] John Burns' cigar [smoke] moments before we left [the haunted site]. At the time, Jamie watched me look over my shoulder [when] we were hit with a second blast of cigar smoke. Later, we confirmed having similar experiences. The haunted building of the murdered young woman freaked us out. Rest assured when we return to Hawaii, we'll be sure to make another stop with your ghost tours." Shah & Jamie De Marino, California, March 6, 2008.
Wartime Tour. "Your tours and film productions are so impressive." Cathleen Smith, Kaneohe, December 11, 2007.
Ghost Tour. "On 11/24, my girlfriend and I went on the ghost tour. I gotta admit, I wasn't expecting much. But by the end of the night, I have to tell you, it was a really good time! I'd recommend this tour to anyone. It was very entertaining, good exercise (cuz there was quite a bit of walking), and Steve was a personable and humble guide." Eric Engbretson, Florence, WI, November 24, 2007.
